1. Drag the file into your library
Open /app/library and drag the file in, or use the Upload button if you'd rather browse for it. Either way works the same from here.
2. Let it auto-detect the type
1Chat inspects the file and picks the right artifact type automatically — a .docx becomes an editable document, an .xlsx becomes a live sheet, a .pptx becomes a deck, and a .pdf becomes a searchable knowledge source. If it guesses wrong, or you specifically want a file handled a different way, you can override the detected type before it finishes importing.
3. What happens to a Word doc
A .docx is parsed into a fully editable document artifact — headings, lists, tables, and bold text carry over structurally, not as a flattened image of the page. Once it's in your library, you can edit it the same way you'd edit any document artifact, and download it back out as a real .docx when you're done.
4. What happens to a PDF
A .pdf becomes searchable knowledge rather than an editable document — PDFs are read-only by nature, so instead of trying to reconstruct an editable version, 1Chat makes its content searchable while keeping the original file intact and downloadable. That means the assistant can pull facts and passages out of it on request, and you can always get the exact original back.
5. Put it to work
Once the upload finishes, the artifact behaves like anything else in your library. Attach it into a chat with # and its name, organize it into a folder alongside related material, or grant an agent access so it can read — or with a .docx, edit — the file as part of its own work.
A folder full of PDFs and Word docs stops being a place things go to be forgotten and starts being something your agents can actually search.
