How to Back Up and Export Your ChatGPT Memory (and Why You Can't Yet)
JJamesAugust 2, 2026
Your ChatGPT memory — everything it's learned about you over months — has no export button, no restore, and no import. When some users' memory panels went blank in late 2025, the only "recovery" was re-typing every fact by hand. So until there's a native export, here's how to protect what your AI knows about you.
She's vegetarian, loves being near the water, and her birthday is the 14th — here are three waterfront places with standout vegetarian menus, all free that evening.
Swap the AI above — it still knows all of this.
One memory, every model.
Step 1: Open your saved memories
In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Personalization → Memory → Manage. You'll see the list of facts it has stored about you. This is the raw material worth backing up.
Step 2: Copy it out yourself
There's no download, so make one. Select the memory list and paste it into a plain text file or a note you control. Do the same for any custom instructions. It's manual, but a text file you own beats a panel that can go blank.
Step 3: Ask it to summarize what it knows
For the softer context that isn't in the memory panel, ask directly:
"Write out everything you remember about me — my preferences, projects, and how I like answers formatted — as a plain-text list."
Save that answer too. It's a portable snapshot of your context.
Step 4: Move it somewhere it's yours
The real fix is to stop keeping your memory in a place you can't export. 1Chat is built the other way around:
Import your memory. Paste that summary in, and 1Chat ingests it as memory every model can use.
One memory across models. It's not locked to one provider — GPT, Claude, and Gemini all share it.
Memory you've spent months building shouldn't live somewhere you can't get it out of. Back up what you have today — then keep it somewhere it can't just disappear.
Try it yourself
Every model, one memory, and agents that work the way you do.
