1. Ask for the sheet you actually need
Be specific about the data and the shape. "Build me a spreadsheet tracking Q3 expenses by category, with a monthly total row" gives the assistant enough to work with. If you already have raw numbers — pasted from an email, a CSV, a table in a doc — include them in the prompt so the sheet is built from your real data, not placeholders.
2. Let it build the artifact
The assistant creates a sheet artifact in the response. Each CSV it generates becomes its own tab, so a request that spans several data sets — say, expenses and revenue and a summary — comes back as multiple tabs in one artifact instead of one crowded table. Totals, subtotals, and running sums are built as real =SUM(...) formulas, so the sheet recalculates like a spreadsheet should, not a static export.
3. Edit it directly
Open the artifact and edit cells the way you'd expect — fix a number, add a row, adjust a label. Formulas that reference the cell you changed update automatically. If the shape is wrong (wrong columns, missing a tab), it's faster to tell the assistant what to change than to rebuild it by hand — describe the fix and it edits the artifact in place.
4. Download it as a real file
When the sheet is ready, download it as a styled .xlsx. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers with the tabs, formulas, and formatting intact — this isn't a CSV dump, it's a spreadsheet file built to be handed off or dropped straight into your own workflow.
5. Keep it for later
If this is a sheet you'll come back to — a budget you update monthly, a tracker you'll add rows to — save it to your library from the artifact inspector instead of letting it live only in this chat. From there you can reopen it, keep editing (each edit creates a new version), and attach it back into any future conversation with # and its name.
A spreadsheet that starts as a sentence and ends as a formula-backed .xlsx is the kind of shortcut that's hard to go back from once you've used it.
